Keith Haring shirt
Keith Haring will always be a part of our lives, whether we like him or dislike him. The street art pioneer who helped mainstream modern art is now being pulled back into the commercial world he tried so hard to avoid.

Seen as both playful and moving, his work includes motifs such a the Radiant Baby. These are a handful of his most recognizable symbols.

Symbols
Keith Haring uses a lot of symbols. These include the globe, the barking dog, and a radiant baby. These appear on walls like graffiti tags. They are a coded reply to the social issues that he was facing at the time.

Barking Dog first appeared in his 1980-85 subway illustrations. It became an icon of oppression as well as aggression that warned people about the dangers of taking authority figures too seriously. Haring has used this motif for AIDS activism since his diagnosis of the disease in 1988. His poster Ignorance=Fear became a key message for the AIDS Awareness movement.

Haring often uses the Heart motif to represent his work. This is seen in many of his works, usually within a crowd or around energy lines. The artist wanted love and community to be conveyed, especially against the backdrop of global politics.

Barking Dog
Haring uses universal concepts, such as death, love, and sex to create his animated images. These have now become a recognized visual language around the world. His art had to be easily accessible to everyone. To achieve this, he chose public spaces like the subway.

He also subtly altered advertisements. Blocking out letters turned an advertisement of Chardon Jeans, into "Hard on Jeans", while creating overtly-political collages by using newspaper cutouts.

In 1989, he created a mural with 500 Chicago school children in his energetic signature style. It included symbols like radiant babies and screaming dogs. This mural, consisting of 122 Masonite 4-by-8-foot panels, shows Haring’s masterful drawing and symbolism. This was the largest piece of public art in his career. Haring died nine months later from AIDS. Haring set up the Keith Haring Foundation following his death. The foundation provides funding and imagery for AIDS organizations and children's groups.

Radiant Baby
The 1980s street art of flying saucers, crawling baby and barking dog by renowned artist became the visual language for entire generations. The art expressed themes like birth, mortality and sexuality. In later works, he re-used his iconography as a way to advocate for AIDS and safe sex.

Haring's spirit is symbolized by a figure called the radiant infant. The radiant newborn is a sign of youth, innocence and potential. The radiance of the baby also implies that it is a powerful source of light and has a unique power. In his paintings he often depicts the radiant child with three large eyes.

Stuart Ross’s script and lyrics by Debra Gasman (and Ira Gasman) lack the wit, emotional depth and humor of the original Keith Haring. Daniel Reichard does a great job portraying the hip-hopping, art-centric Haring. But his character lacks a lot of complexity. Kate Jennings Grant's role as the chronically worried Office Manager, Aaron Lohr's as the hunky Photographer and Keong Sim as his AIDS stricken Lover all have cloyingly sentimental characters.

Globe
Haring's use in high art of flat shapes, saturated colours and simplified line was influenced and merged by Pop Art. He had learned basic animation skills as a boy and was greatly influenced by Walt Disney’s, Charles Schultz’s and Dr Seuss’s animation.

After arriving in New York for the first time, he quickly became involved with New York's underground scene. He befriended Kenny Scharf as well as fellow artists Jean-Michel Basquiat. The group had the same passion for urban street art and the idea that art could be used in public spaces.

Haring has also created monumental public art. These included the antidrug mural Crack is Wack that was placed in a Harlem Playground to a version illuminated of his radiant Baby in Times Square. His desire to have his work available to a large audience led him in 1986 to open Pop Shop, which sold T shirts and other merchandise that featured his iconic pictures.
