Barren Island | |
Barren Island, located in the Andaman Sea, is the only confirmed active volcano in the Indian subcontinent. The island is about 135 kilometers northeast of Port Blair in the Andaman Islands and is uninhabited. It is a stratovolcano with a two-kilometer-wide caldera, rising about 2,250 meters from the seafloor and poking 354 meters above the water line. The most recent eruption was reported in June 2022, and the island is known for its historical and ongoing volcanic activity, with occasional ash plumes and thermal anomalies. The island is a remote dive destination, accessible by live-aboard ships or scuba diving. The area around the volcano's summit shows thermal anomalies, indicating warm surface temperatures. The island is under the jurisdiction of the Indian union territory of A & N Islands. | |
