The #1 Superfood in the World

Red meat, often labeled as unhealthy, may actually be the top superfood. Many associate it with cancer, heart disease, and diabetes due to saturated fat content. Yet, evidence linking grass-fed red meat to these diseases is lacking. It provides numerous nutrients like iron, selenium, zinc, and antioxidants such as carnosine, which help prevent glycation (a harmful protein-sugar combination). While greens powder contains vitamins and minerals like magnesium, potassium, and phytonutrients, red meat offers higher-quality nutrients in some areas.

The benefits of red meat are especially evident when considering protein’s role. It is essential for muscle, collagen, enzymes, neurotransmitters, hormones, immune cells, and various bodily functions. Protein helps regulate blood sugar through glucagon, which balances insulin effects, thus playing a vital role in managing energy levels and metabolism. For those experiencing brain fog or fatigue, as in my own experience, switching to a protein-rich diet improved clarity and energy.

One aspect that sets red meat apart is its support for processes like autophagy and gluconeogenesis. During autophagy, the body recycles old tissue, while gluconeogenesis allows for glucose production from protein, providing energy when needed. Amino acids such as taurine and leucine, found abundantly in red meat, aid in maintaining blood pressure and muscle synthesis. Unlike low-quality proteins in processed foods, red meat delivers a complete and effective protein source.

Many processed foods, while high in carbs and unhealthy fats, lack adequate protein, leading people to overeat in an attempt to meet their protein needs. This aligns with the protein leverage hypothesis, which suggests that animals, insects, and humans eat until they satisfy their protein requirements. My own observations with animals, like horses that become overweight when fed carbohydrate-rich grasses, reflect this pattern.

Moreover, the differences between red and white meat are notable. Red meat contains myoglobin, enhancing oxygen transport, and more iron, making it suitable for those with anemia or high physical activity levels. Additionally, ruminant animals like cows convert grass nutrients into energy and high-quality protein with the help of gut microbes. These microbes digest fiber, supplying the animal with essential nutrients, while the protein itself supports calorie burning due to its thermogenic properties.

Contrary to common beliefs, the nutrients in red meat, especially grass-fed varieties, offer substantial health benefits without the risks typically associated with processed meats. The widespread negative perception may be due to conflating all red meat with processed options, despite significant differences. Exploring red meat’s actual benefits might challenge conventional health advice, encouraging a more balanced perspective on dietary choices.
