Ennore oil spill | |
Ennore oil spill CPCL refuses 73.7cr penalty Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) rejected the IIT Madras report on the oil spill during Cyclone Michaung, saying it is "flawed and based on inaccurate methods to determine both the source of the leak and volume spilled in Ennore". Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), acting on a National Green Tribunal (NGT) order from Oct 2024, issued a show cause notice asking CPCL why it shouldn't pay a penalty of 73.68 crore for the spill. CPCL refused to pay, citing the incident as a force majeure situation, arguing that all industries in Manali area were severely impacted by flooding. PSU pointed out that around 25 petrochemical and chemical industries operate in and around Manali, with oil also found in upstream areas of its unit along the Kosasthalaiyar river. It maintained that penalising CPCL was unfair, given that it took all efforts to restore normalcy in Ennore #CPCL #Indianpetroplus | |
