TKA: What to Expect from Total Knee Replacement | |
Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA), or total knee replacement, is a surgical procedure used to replace a damaged or worn-out knee joint with an artificial implant. It is commonly recommended for patients suffering from severe arthritis or knee injuries that cause chronic pain and limited mobility. The goal of TKA is to relieve pain, improve joint function, and restore quality of life. Before surgery, patients undergo a thorough medical evaluation, including imaging tests and physical therapy to strengthen the knee. The procedure is performed under general or spinal anesthesia and usually takes 1–2 hours. During surgery, the damaged bone and cartilage are removed, and metal and plastic components are used to recreate the joint's structure. After surgery, most patients stay in the hospital for 1–3 days, depending on their recovery progress. Physical therapy begins immediately to promote healing and improve joint movement. Pain management through medication and ice therapy is provided to ease discomfort. Most patients can resume light activities within 4–6 weeks, but full recovery may take 3–6 months.
